An advocacy group is claiming that local governments across Ontario are being pushed into secrecy, over plans for a proposed high-speed rail line.
The group warns that municipalities must sign non-disclosure agreements to access route details for the Alto project from Toronto to Quebec City, pitting communities against each other without public input.
Directors at ALTNO argue this process severely harms local democracy by forcing council staff to keep critical land-use information hidden from taxpayers.
Now, the organization is calling on MPP’s and municipal leaders to take a firm stand against these gag orders.
They want the rail project’s proposed route, which will have at least one line through the Quinte region, made fully public, so local residents can have a say in how their communities are impacted.
