Damage estimates are around $250,000 following a Friday afternoon blaze in Quinte West.
Emergency crews responded to the area of Telephone Road and County Road 40 (Wooler Road) around 3:30 p.m..
Upon arrival, fire members discovered a garage fully engulfed, with a classic car inside and dangerous materials.
Fire Chief for Quinte West John Whalen:
” … numerous 911 calls about a garage on fire. Station 2 Murray Hall responded in a quick manner. They concentrated the initial attack on the garage, and then it was so close to the house that’s where our secondary response came in. They did save the house. The garage has got a lot of damage to it. There was a classic car in the garage too.”
“There were acetylene torches in the garage and propane tanks, so we have to be aware of these accelerants exploding. Very dangerous when you have a mechanical shop or a garage that has all those items in it. Usually we can tell by the size of the garage, or neighbours will tell us if no one’s home or the occupants will.”
Fire inspectors are back on scene Monday to try and determine a cause.
No injuries were reported and crews saved the adjacent home on the property.
