The Municipality of Brighton is hoping a planned New Nuclear Project at the Wesleyville site will take a regional approach as opposed to just a local one.
Ontario Power Generation signed a partnership agreement with the Municipality of Port Hope earlier this year that would see the site provide up to 10,000 megawatts of new nuclear generating capacity, support 1,700 new jobs in Port Hope and contribute $235 billion to Ontario’s GDP over its lifespan.
Brighton Mayor Brian Ostrander says council has passed a resolution that includes staff advocating for a regional approach to the project that will involve all municipalities of Northumberland County.
He says the impacts will stretch beyond Port Hope.
“We’re expecting that we would have significant impacts from an employment perspective which would mean significant impacts from residential needs, transit needs and so on. So our request to OPG is to please keep your eye on the region, the regional impacts, not just for Port Hope.”
Ostrander likens the employment impact on the municipality to that of CFB Trenton.
Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Mines Stephen Lecce says the Wesleyville Project would create world’s largest nuclear generating station.
