Unlike Belleville council, Centre Hastings council has voted against applying to the Development Charges Reduction Program.
Under that program a municipality must reduce development charges up to 50 per cent in exchange for access to senior government
funding for infrastructure projects focused on housing development.
However, Centre Hastings’ two main housing infrastructure projects, a water standpipe and trunk sewer project in Madoc,
have already received funding from other government programs and would not be eligible for the new program.
Council also worried about the lack of any guarantee it would receive any or enough funding if it did reduce development charges
and apply to the program.
Meanwhile, council approved a proposal from the Madoc Royal Canadian Legion Branch 363 and the Madoc Business
Improvement Team (BIT) to have two Veterans Memorial (Fallen Soldier) crosswalks installed.
They would be placed at the intersections of Elgin and Durham streets and St. Lawrence Street East and Durham Street.
The installation and ongoing maintenance of the crosswalks would be paid for by the Legion and BIT.
