August 2024 is going to be a month to remember in the history of Picton Terminals.
First, they reached a settlement in legal proceedings with the County of Prince Edward. Those proceedings went on for several years.
Secondly, they announced a major expansion to their site.
Owner Ben Doornekamp says they will be constructing what is called a bulk agricultural marine terminal.

He says that will expand what will be imported and exported at the site on Picton Bay.
“It’s a bulk shipping terminal. What lands underneath, that is everything from agricultural, to steel, to break bulk, to project cargo containers, everything.”
They are leasing the land to agri-business company Parrish and Heimbecker, who will oversee agricultural shipping.
“We’re really excited for the opportunity. It brings huge opportunity to the farm community in our region that we feel that they’ve always had the short end of the stick. We’re one of the few regions that don’t have a deep-water port nearby. “
“The last leg, which we call in the shipping world the last mile, is very short. For people locally, regionally, if you’re bringing cargo in, your last mile is from Montreal typically or Hamilton, so you’re trucking it from those locations into our region. Our last mile is much shorter.”
