A woman with the Mohawks of the Bay of the Quinte is being recognized with the Indspire Award for Education.
Kanonhsyonne Janice Hill is a Clan Mother of the Turtle Clan, Mohawk Nation in Tyendinaga as well as the Associate Vice-Principal of Indigenous Initiatives and Reconciliation at Queen’s University.
She has been credited as a founding member of the Tsi Tsyonnheht Onkwawenna Language Circle (TTO). She also helped to found the Haudenosaunee Opportunity for Personal Education (HOPE) program for Mohawk high school students and is a founding member of the Kanhiote Tyendinaga Territory Public Library.
Kanonhsyonne served on different committees relating to Indigenous education, language, and culture.
She is one of 12 people being recognized by Indspire in 2024.
The awards ceremony is set to be broadcast on APTN and CBC on National Indigenous Peoples Day.
