The Madoc Pool will continue operating in 2024 with a little help from the YMCA.
Centre Hastings Council has accepted an offer from the YMCA that would see the organization run the pool this summer along with a summer camp.
The Y will operate and staff the pool which would be available for swimming lessons and public swimming seven days a week, as well as a summer camp that will run in the Whytock Park Lawn Bowling building.
The municipality will continue to complete repairs and maintenance.
Mayor Tom Deline tells Quinte News council was considering closing the pool this year and instead funding a weekly shuttle bus to a neighbouring community like Tweed for swimming sessions in July and August.
When staff inquired about the possibility, YMCA officials suggested the Madoc partnership.
He says the municipality’s biggest problem is staffing the pool so the Y’s offer was welcome.
Centre Hastings has almost $62,000 of taxpayer support for the pool service in the 2024 budget.
Deline adds that money is still being raised for a new pool in the community and the municipality will also be applying for funding sometime in the future.
