Central Hastings OPP have laid attempted murder charges after three people suffered serious stab wounds in Madoc Township.
Police say the incident happened between 11:30 p.m. and midnight on Wednesday on McCann Road in Eldorado when a man was travelling to the area via a taxi.
It’s alleged that the car driver, a 59-year-old man, was assaulted and suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver drove himself to a nearby gas station and was transported to a hospital in Kingston.
Two other people were also assaulted in their home. A 64-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries. The two were taken to hospital by Hastings-Quinte Paramedics.
The suspect is then said to have fled the scene in a stolen vehicle and was seen driving on Highway 62. He was arrested without incident.
Thirty-six-year-old Matthew Helm of Tweed is charged with the following:
- Attempt to commit murder – three counts
- Break and enter with the intent to commit an indictable offence
- Theft of a motor vehicle
- Mischief over $5000
The accused was remanded into custody and has a scheduled appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on May 2, 2024.
Investigators believe there was no safety risk to the general public during the incident.
