Prince Edward County is expanding eligibility criteria for on-demand transit shuttles to include people at risk of becoming homeless or currently experiencing homelessness.
During Tuesday’s meeting of council, Prince Edward County council voted to approve expanding the program, which was originally only for the elderly or those with physical disabilities.
Adding more eligible riders is not expected to increase the costs of providing the program.
Under the new system, riders can be referred to the program if it is determined that better access to transportation can help them with gaining or retaining employment, with the goal of keeping people from falling into homelessness or to help get people into a stable housing environment.
The new eligibility criteria will remain in effect until the planned program refresh in 2025.
