A Phase Two Environmental Site Assessment has been done on the former Intelligencer building in downtown Belleville.
Plans for residential development on the site have long been in the works.
On Monday, Belleville council approved a $40,000 Brownfield Environmental Site Assessment Rebate for the company doing the environmental assessment.
Brownfield properties are vacant or underutilized places where past industrial or commercial activities may have left contamination behind.
The Brownfield rebate program supports redevelopment and renovation of brownfield sites by providing a one-time rebate for fees associated with a Phase II E.S.A. and the development of a Remediation Action Plan.
$40,000 is the maximum rebate under the program.
Belleville’s Director of Engineering and Development Services, Stephen Ashton says while investment in the site will great, there is still a long process before anything can happen.
