Quinte West council has approved a plan to revitalize a set of public tennis courts at Tuckers Corners into a multi-surface venue including pickleball, tennis, and basketball courts.
The project was approved during Wednesday’s meeting of council and has an approved budget of $200,000. The project is planned to be finished this year.
The existing courts on site support only tennis and have been in a state of disrepair. A staff report outlines the work that is needed to renovate them. Fencing and asphalt will need to be replaced, a new accessible path from nearby parking to the courts will be constructed, and the new asphalt surfaces will need to be sealed and lines painted.
Estimates for the total cost by staff range from between $150,000 and $200,000 depending on if the foundation under the courts also needs to be replaced.
Councillor Michael Kotsovos had concerns about starting the project this year when there were already major events being planned, including the air show and a soccer championship, and considered postponing the project to 2025.
“So I do not want to wage battle on multiple fronts so to speak. I don’t want to be over-extended and I’m concerned that staff will be if they take this on and don’t wait until next year,” Councillor Kotsovos stated.
Council voted to proceed with the project as planned, without delay.
