Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating an incident after a 48-year-old man was shot by an Ontario Police Officer in Marmora and Lake.
The SIU tells Quinte News that they responded to a report of man making threats at a remote hunting cabin in the area of Twin Sister Lakes Road around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
When police arrived, the man was said to have barricaded himself behind the door.
Police negotiators and tactical unit officers were sent to the scene.
The Canine Unit and Aviation Services were also sent to the scene.
The SIU says there was an interaction with police and the man, leading an officer to shoot a “less-lethal” firearm. It is then said the man shot at police, which led to an officer shooting the man with a firearm.
In a release, the Ontario Provincial Police said that the man sustained a non-life threatening injury.
The man was arrested and taken to hospital via an ambulance.
He is currently in a Kingston hospital.
48-year-old Jason Bedore of Tweed was charged with the following:
- Attempt to commit murder using firearm
- Careless use of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
- Possession of firearm or ammunition
Bedore was held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville.
The police investigation is continuing by the Central Hastings Crime Unit under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch.
OPP say they will provide no further comment with the SIU mandate invoked.
Three investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the SIU case.
