An investigation into the cause of a fire at 217 Pinnacle Street is expected to continue into Tuesday and potentially into Wednesday.
Belleville police and emergency crews were called to the stone building around 11 p.m. Sunday and found the building to be engulfed in flames when crews arrived.
The fire has been deemed suspicious by the Belleville Fire Department’s Fire Prevention team.
The Belleville Police Service Forensic Investigations Unit and Criminal Investigations Division is receiving assistance from the Office of the Fire Marshal of Ontario in determining the origin and cause of the fire.
A large section of the downtown core, including Pinnacle Street from Victoria Avenue to Bridge Street East, has been blocked off to maintain public safety as well as for continuity of any evidence as the scene is being looked at by examiners.
Significant delays in that area are expected throughout Tuesday and potentially into Wednesday as the scene is processed.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Det-Const. Erin McAdam at 613-966-0882 ext. 4185 or emcadam@bellevilleps.ca.
Those looking to provide information to police anonymously can reach out to Crime Stoppers by calling 613-969-8477 or visiting crimestoppersquinte.ca to submit online.
