Brighton’s mayor is responding to the act of vandalism at Trinity-St. Andrew’s United Church.
The church says vandals painted over and defaced the three separate rainbow steps leading into the building during the overnight hours on Tuesday.
Mayor Brian Ostrander says he was deeply saddened by the act.
“It’s disheartening to bear witness to such a blatant display of intolerance, ignorance and criminal behaviour in our community,” Mayor Ostrander said in an audio statement.
“Now Brighton, I know that we won’t allow acts like this to define us, but they do serve as a stark reminder of the work that still needs to be done in promoting understanding, acceptance and compassion for all of the residents of Brighton. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the congregation of Trinity-St. Andrews and to all those who have rallied together in the face of this adversity.”
Ostrander says the municipality stands in solidarity with the church.
“As a symbol of our unity and our want to be better, to do better and to represent our true welcoming and inclusive nature, the rainbow flag will fly proudly outside the municipal centre,” Ostrander said.
“We stand with Trinity-St. Andrews, and we stand with the LGBTQ2S+ community as they heal from this vandalism.”
A paint party was held at the church Friday afternoon to help restore the steps.
