The City of Belleville is a holding special ceremony for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Saturday at West Zwick’s Park.
Councillor Sean Kelly who is also chair of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, says everyone is welcome to attend to learn more about the ongoing legacy of the residential school system.
“It’s a special experience as well when you hear the stories. You’ll leave our ceremony with more knowledge and more understanding why it’s important for Truth and Reconciliation. We know the Truth and now we have to do the Reconciliation.”
The event will feature music by Jennifer Brant and Kieran Edwards and several guest speakers.
” … including Chief R. Don Maracle of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, local author and energy healer Tara White, former professional hockey player, Stanley Cup winner Norm Maracle will be sharing his journey. And also, Bonnie Jane Maracle, part of the Wolf Clan, will be speaking on the historical significance of the Tyendinaga Longhouse.”
Those attending are encouraged to wear orange in honour of Orange Shirt Day.
The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at the Lions Pavilion.
This is the third year the City of Belleville has held a ceremony.
It was held at Market Square the first two years.
In addition to the ceremony, the Belleville sign, Bridge Street Bridge and Fire Station #1 Memorial Garden will be lit in orange for the week.
The flag at City Hall will also be lowered to half-staff to remember and mourn all victims of the residential school system.
