A date has been set for an inquest into the deaths of a couple at Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg in 2017.
Helen Ryan, 76, was shot by her 70-year-old husband Tom Ryan in the emergency department area of the hospital on October 27, 2017.
Tom Ryan was subsequently shot by Cobourg Police Service officers.
An inquest into Tom Ryan’s death is mandatory under the Coroners Act, however, the Chief Coroner has directed a combined inquest be held.
The inquest will begin September 18 and is expected to last 11 days and hear from approximately 18 witnesses.
The Special Investigations Unit, which probes police-involved shootings, cleared the officers involved of wrongdoing, saying in a 2018 report that the force used during the incident was “justified.”
