A special service will be held at Belleville Cenotaph to commemorate three major historical events in Canada’s history.
The service will pay tribute to the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the Battle of the Atlantic and VE day.
Chair of the Veterans Council Terry Law tells Quinte News the event will be very similar to the Remembrance Day service. “That includes laying of wreaths and comments by the provincial government, the city of Belleville and representatives of military units such as 8 Wing RCAF Association, the Duke of Edinburgh unit and the Afghanistan unit.”
Law says the ceremony is important as it recognizes certain times in the Canadian military history such as Vimy Ridge.
“It recognizes the Battle of Vimy Ridge began on Easter morning 1917 and the four divisions of the Canadian Corps fighting together for the first time attacked the ridge from the ninth to the 12th of April to take the ridge.”
He adds, “The taking of the ridge from the Germans was significant in World War I. Two other units on the British side had failed.”
“Two other people (units) had tried it and didn’t have success and this was really the coming together of the Canadian forces as something from Canada, as opposed to all the (British) United Kingdom.”
The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Belleville cenotaph.
