Prince Edward County’s Planning Committee has approved the rezoning of land in Picton for a new apartment building that will be affordable housing.
The property at 29 Disraeli Street, owned by the Prince Edward County Affordable Housing Corporation, had been zoned Institutional.
The rezoning to Special Urban Residential Type 3 will allow for the construction of a 12-unit affordable apartment building.
The decision still needs to be ratified at council’s next meeting in August.
Planner Dale Egan tells Quinte News there will be a public information meeting about the development sometime in the future.
The proposed project is a partnership between the Housing Corporation and the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte which will see 50% of the units dedicated to Indigenous people under the age of 30 who are on a registered waitlist for affordable housing.
