In what seems an unusual situation, an employer is supporting wage increases for employees.
In a letter sent Thursday to the Minister of Education the Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic District School Board asks that the province give fair wage increases to members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, or CUPE.
Educational Assistants, Early Childhood educators, custodians, and office staff are members of CUPE.
A recent province-wide survey indicates that the average salary for those education workers is $39,000 a year with over 84% of those surveyed earning less than $50,000.
The Catholic school board says recent wage restraints have hurt those workers and believes they should see real wage gains in the upcoming provincial negotiations.
