Hastings County is calling on the province to add another “call” to its Amber Alert system.
At a meeting of Hastings County Council on Thursday, Centre Hastings Mayor Tom Deline brought the issue to council’s attention. Deline referred to the death of an Oshawa area child on the autistic spectrum.
Eleven-year-old Draven Graham died after walking away from his family.
Deline pointed out that the alert is limited right now.
“Whereas the amber alert has been very effective in announcing to the public children who have been abducted, and whereas a similar alert program, for those who have special needs who leave family custody, would seem to be warranted in the province of Ontario.”
Police can activate an alert when a child – or an adult with a proven mental or physical disability -is abducted and at risk of harm.
Council voted to ask all upper governments and Ontario Provincial Police to request the province create a community warning program, similar to Amber Alert for people with special needs.
