Belleville Police have arrested a Quebec man in connection with a grandparent scam fraud.
On Friday afternoon, police received information that an elderly man had received calls advising his grandson was in jail in British Columbia and he should take a large sum of money out of the bank to help him.
Police advised the man not to provide any money as it was a scam.
While investigating the first incident, police received a second complaint about the same scam.
Officers were able to identify a potential meeting point for the cash exchange and arrested a 22-year-old man from Laval.
Jose Angel Acostia-Tabia is charged with two counts of Fraud over $5000 and one count of attempt Fraud over $5000.
Belleville Police remind the public to be very suspicious of unsolicited telephone calls requesting money related to family members being arrested and held for bail.
No one from a legitimate law enforcement agency or the courts would ever call and demand money for a bail situation.
If a person claims to be from a police service, you can call the service directly to confirm the situation.
