The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, the annual fundraiser for Three Oaks Foundation women’s shelter, is back with a new format and a lofty goal.
Coordinator Kaitlyn Chapman says this year instead of just one event, participants are being encouraged to arrange a group to do the walk together and that can be completed any time during the last two weeks of June.
With the event being cancelled the last two years due to COVID, organizers thought the change would be good.
“We’ve seen people before in other locations who’ve done this style where they’ve gone, maybe they’re on travels. They take their shoes with them, go photograph it somewhere and it kinda makes it this fun virtual experience.”
There will still be a main event at Keegan Parkway on June 29 for people who would like to participate.
Chapman says it will start just east of the former Cheese Producers Ball Diamond off Keegan Parkway at 6 p.m.
“We have our three oak trees down there and our plaque that’s for December 6 which would have been the Montreal Massacre. So it’s quite a significant date for violence against women. So we’re starting there because of the symbolism and then we’re gonna walk up the strip of Keegan Parkway.”
Chapman says previous events raised around $15,000 or $20,000 each year but this year they’re aiming big and would like to raise as much as $150,000.
The theme of this year’s walk is Calling Out Violence Against Women.
While cancel culture can be a controversial topic, Chapman says in this case it’s an opportunity to exclude violence against women in our community and collectively vocalize that it is not welcome.
Men who participate will be provided with a pair of red high heels to raise awareness about violence against women.
Registrations are still being accepted.
