Large motorcycle convoy expected

A major motorcycle ride in honour of Canada’s military veterans is returning Saturday, June 4, after a two-year  pandemic break.

The Heroes Highway Ride will leave Trenton’s industrial park Saturday morning.

Organizer Lou DeVuono says he expects at least 1,500 bikers to make the ride down the Highway of Heroes, heading to Memorial Park in Port Hope for a rally and fundraiser.

Registration is free for the Heroes ride but DeVuono says various veterans and first responder organizations will gladly accept donations at their displays in Port Hope.

“People do get to talk to the charities first-hand and they get to understand the programs or services that they offer and then they can focus their efforts or donation to one specific program instead of it being broad-based.”

DeVuono says just thinking of veterans once a year just doesn’t cut it.

“But we really don’t recognize our heroes during the regular year, the injured people, the number of ones that have done a number of tours over the years, have served Canada bravely.  They’re our greatest ambassadors.”

Motorcyclists will gather on Trenton’s North Murray Street and leave for Highway 401 at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The ride has traditionally left the Air Force Museum area on RCAF Road but federal COVID-19 protocols have caused the gathering venue to be changed for this year.
