The Wellington Dukes held on and kept the Haliburton County Huskies within a game in the standings following an overtime win yesterday afternoon.
The Dukes were on the road and jumped out to a quick two goal lead within the first five minutes of puck drop thanks to markers from Ethan Esposito and Jacob Vreugdenhill.
The Huskies notched a goal of their own before the period was over to make it 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.
The score held through the middle frame but the Huskies were determined they were not going to give up without a fight and Oliver Tarr tied the game with one second left in regulation to force overtime.
Emmet Pierce was able to find the back of the net just over 90 seconds into the extra frame to give the Dukes a hard fought victory on the road.
Ethan Morrow had the win in net for Wellington, making 42 saves.
The Dukes were outshot 44-27 in the game.
Wellington is back in action Sunday night when they take on the Toronto Patriots at 7 p.m.
The Trenton Golden Hawks also were able to earn two points on the road on Saturday night.
They defeated the Toronto Patriots 4-0.
It was a nail biter of a game as after 40 minutes neither team had managed to figure out how to beat the goaltenders at either end of the ice.
Jake Campbell then got the Golden Hawks on the board 20 seconds into the final frame for a 1-0 lead.
Stephen McDonald then added the reassurance marker at the 14:27 mark of the period before Ryan O’Toole added another 19 seconds later.
Dalton Bancroft got his second point of the game when he scored less than a minute later for the 4-0 lead.
Stephen Dobrich also had two points in the win.
Trenton’s netminder Nguyen William faced 34 shots in the game, and the Golden Hawks had 41 shots on net.
In the Provincial Junior Hockey League, it was the Napanee Raiders over the Campbellford Rebels 6-1 and the Picton Pirates got by the Port Hope Panthers 4-3.
