One local resident is feeling some of the community’s kindness that comes around this time of year.
Juan Hernandez runs a business consisting of eight vending machines under a lean-to on the side of his house on Octavia Street.
Recently the business, which he relies on for extra income, has been put in jeopardy by a city council decision deeming it in contradiction of zoning by-laws.
He said that when he returned home from work Thursday evening he found an envelope addressed to him.
Upon opening the envelope, he said he realized that it contained $1,100 in cash.
Hernandez recalled leaving a comment on Facebook saying that the rezoning process had cost him $7,100 which left him in debt and he could not afford the $1,100 for the appeal to the city.
The money in the envelope contained exactly enough for him to file the appeal.
Hernandez said he’s beyond grateful for the “overwhelming support” he’s received from the community throughout the ordeal.
He said he’s currently in touch with a planning consultant to determine the viability of an appeal.
