The Municipality of Brighton has found a new location for its pickleball courts.
Currently, Brighton has a single outdoor pickle ball court at the Hilda Montgomery Park in Gosport.
A plan to increase the number of courts was met with some resistance.
At its meeting this week, council received a staff report recommending various locations for the new courts and ultimately chose to relocate the new courts to King Edward Park in the vacant area behind the lower ball diamond noting its easy access, adequate parking and washroom facilities.
The new courts will cost $125,000 with $100,000 of that to come from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, $20,000 through development charges and the other $5,000 in parkland reserves.
Construction will begin in October with an anticipated opening in mid to late spring 2022.
The Brighton Pickleball Club holds approximately 90 members with a wait list of more participants.
Mayor Brian Ostrander says the new location in King Edward Park will add to the recreational development of Brighton’s downtown sporting area.
