Despite push back from some residents in Prince Edward County, demolition has begun on a pair of mid-1800s heritage homes at Sandbanks Provincial Park.
Crews began to tear down the Hyatt and MacDonald houses on Thursday after a recent decision by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks saying the homes’ deteriorated wood frames “present serious health and safety risks” and that the homes “are of limited heritage value as there is nothing unique about them.”
The group Save Heritage Sandbanks Homes had repeatedly asked the government to reconsider, but the ministry is standing by its decision.
The ministry says once demolition is complete “Ontario Parks will invite the Prince Edward Heritage Advisory Committee and other interested individuals to assist in preparing materials to commemorate the buildings” and discuss how those sites can best be used in the future.
