Attempts by Prince Edward County residents to save two houses built in the mid-1800s in Sandbanks Park continue.
However, it appears the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks intends to go ahead and demolish the MacDonald and Hyatt houses despite their efforts to save them for upgrading and repurposing.
In a recent letter to the citizens group Save Heritage Sandbanks Homes, the Ministry maintains the deteriorated condition of the wood frame houses presents serious health and safety risks and that they are of limited heritage value as there is nothing unique about them.
Below is the Ministry’s letter to the citizens group.
In correspondence sent to the Ministry, local politicians and others, the Save Heritage Sandbanks Homes group again took issue with the government’s position.
The group has again asked that the demolition of the houses be paused to allow further detailed study on other options for them.
Below is part of that communication.
Demolition of the MacDonald-Hyatt houses could begin as early as Wednesday September 1.
