Prince Edward County council will hold a special meeting Monday to discuss the “Holding Court” statue of Sir John A. Macdonald on Picton Main Street.
In light of the recent discovery of the bodies of 215 indigenous children at the site of a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C., Mayor Steve Ferguson announced Friday that council will reopen the conversation on the statue.
Last year, the conversation was opened and discussed at length due to vandalism of the statue.
Many called for the statue to be removed due to Macdonald’s role in the institution of residential schools for indigenous children.
Eventually, council voted last fall to leave the statue where it is.
There is an agreement written into the original contract from when the statue was donated that says that council must consult with the artist before moving the statue from its location on Picton Main Street.
The special meeting begins at 7 p.m.
