After 10 seasons in the NHL which included two Stanley Cup championships, Belleville native Andrew Shaw is retiring.
The 29-year-old Shaw leaves the game after doctors strongly recommended his retirement due to his history of concussions.
In a statement this morning (Monday) Shaw said, “There comes a time when every athlete needs to realize when their health is a priority and a future with their family is what is most important. That point for me is now. After several concussions, doctors have strongly recommended I stop playing the game that I love. For once in my life, I am going to listen.”
Shaw missed most of last season after suffering a concussion in November 2019. He suffered another one on February 9 which would be the last game he played in the NHL.
Shaw play 544 games in the NHL which included three seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. He scored 116 goals and 247 points while playing well above his weight of 182 pounds. The feisty Shaw also had 573 penalty minutes.
Shaw won Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks in 2013 and 2015.
