Brighton council has decided to delay any decision on costly upgrades to the urban area’s sewage treatment system.
Previously council had asked for tenders to install Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor technology to produce clean run-off into local waterways.
However all six bids came in over the $8.8 million budget with the lowest being over $10 million.
Mayor of Brighton Brian Ostrander says the purchase of new aerators last June has helped significantly reduce ammonia levels in the treated wastewater and council will continue to work with the Ministry of Environment to make modest, less costly improvements while planning for a complete overhaul of the system in future years.
Ostrander says council believed it would be better to spend thousands instead of millions of dollars at this time as there was no immediate need to do so.
