It’s taken longer than hoped but it’s expected a new four-storey seniors’ apartment building will be built in downtown Marmora starting next spring.
Recently, development company FairTradeWorks won an appeal at the provincial Local Planning Appeal Tribunal giving the green light for the construction of a four-storey 18 to 20 unit building on Forsyth Street. There would be commercial space on the ground floor.
President of FairTradeWorks Jim Perkins is happy with the decision but was disappointed that the appeal had delayed the project by a year, and not only cost his company significant money but also Marmora and Lake taxpayers.
Marmora and Lake council had supported the rezoning to allow the development but resident Lori Tannahill appealed to LPAT, believing the apartment building would be inconsistent with the provincial policy statements and the municipality’s own official plan.
The building will be known as “Lummiss Residences” and its projected cost is $4 to 5 million. It will be fully accessible with an elevator and other amenities specifically for seniors.
FairTradeWorks had previously built another seniors’ residence in downtown Marmora with commercial space on the ground floor.
The Bleeckers, at 13 Forsyth Street, has 10 units and Perkins says the residents are really enjoying the building.
