A Belleville city councillor wants to see a public discussion involving council regarding policing and dealing with mental health and addictions calls.
At Monday’s meeting, Councillor Chris Malette said he’d introduce a motion at council’s next meeting to organize a public meeting after councillors received emails and other communications from people wanting changes to the police budget to allow more money for mental health and addictions services.
Previously, Belleville’s Chief of Police Ron Gignac has said changes should be made when it comes to funding and policing calls involving people with mental health and addictions challenges.
A Facebook group known as Belleville Peaceful Streets Network has been contacting councillors and others regarding the issue.
