The Belleville Police Service responded to 83 calls for service from July 7, 2020 at 5 a.m. to July 8, 2020 at 5 a.m.
Vehicle Entered & Damaged
On July 7, 2020 at approximately 9 a.m., police were notified by a west park resident that their vehicle, which was parked outside their residence, was broken into and tires were slashed. Police attended the scene and found that the vehicle had been egged as well. It was determined that this occurred over the nighttime hours and there were no suspects observed or reported in the area at the time. On July 7, 2020 at approximately 11 a.m., city police received a complaint from a business on Mineral Road that a vehicle on their property had its windshield smashed out. There was no store video available and no suspects. Damage is estimated at $500.
Motor Vehicle Collisions
On July 7, 2020 at 10:30 a.m., city officers attended a motor vehicle collision in front of the police station on Dundas Street East. There were minor injuries reported but medical attention was not required. A 54-year-old Belleville woman was charged with one count of Carless Driving.
On July 7, 2020 at approximately 7 p.m., city police attended a motor vehicle collision on Hwy 2 at Mitchell Road. Police report that there were no injuries but there was considerable damage to the vehicles involved. A 33-year-old Belleville man was charged with Careless Driving.
Police Assistance
On July 7th, 2020 at approximately 11am, city police received a frantic call from an assisted living residence staff member that a resident of the home was self-harming herself in her bedroom. Officers rushed to the scene and contacted the woman who was in crisis and found her with a shirt tied around her neck. The officers were able make the situation safe and able to calm the woman enough to have a conversation. Subsequently, officers were able to assist the woman to Belleville General hospital where she received crisis care and treatment.
Suspended Driver
On July 7, 2020 at approximately 1:30 p.m., city police conducted a traffic stop on Pine Street near Lingham Street. The officer found the driver to be suspended in the province of Ontario. A 32-year-old Belleville man was charged with Driving While Under Suspension.
Warrants
On July 7, 2020 at approximately 2:30 p.m., city police were dispatched to a southwest residence on an unrelated matter. However, upon police arrival, they found that the complainant in fact, had a warrant for her arrest for breaching her probation. The 40-year-old Belleville woman was taken into custody and held at the Belleville police station for a Show Cause Hearing in front of a Provincial Court Justice scheduled for July 8.
On July 8, 2020 at approximately 2:30 a.m., city police were dispatched to an abandoned residence on Pine Street regarding a smashed window. Police searched the surrounding area and inside the residence and located a male suspect near the residence. The investigation revealed that the suspected was wanted by city police on a bail breach. The accused was taken into custody and transported to the Belleville police station. Twenty-four-year-old Damian Helm of Quinte West was charged with one count of Fail to Comply with a Court Order. Mr. Helm was released on the endorsed warrant and is scheduled to attend Belleville Ontario Court of Justice on August 20.
Shoplifting
On July 7, 2020 at approximately 4 p.m., city police responded to Canadian Tire on Bell Blvd in regards to a female shoplifter. Police received information that the suspect had attempted to steal approximately $25 worth of product however was prevented from doing so by store security. The 40-year-old Belleville resident was charged with Engaging in Unlawful Activity on Premises and was escorted off the property by city police.
Bail – Breach of Conditions
On July 7, 2020 at approximately 4:30 p.m., city police attended a townhouse complex in the southeast end of the city regarding a male who booted in a door at a residence and was inside. As officers arrived on scene, the suspect took off on the run. Officers chased the suspect down and took him into custody. The investigation revealed that the suspect was a 17-year-old youth male that had just been in custody two hours before and in front of a Provincial court Justice at his Show Cause Hearing. The Justice placed certain conditions on the youth and one of them was not to be at the residence that police just found him at. City police will be holding the youth suspect in custody again and present him before the Provincial Court Justice for a Show Cause Hearing on July 8, 2020 at 11 a.m. to answer to his breach of bail recognizance charge.
Domestic Assault
On July 7, 2020 at approximately 7 p.m., police attended a northeast residence in regards to a domestic dispute. The female victim had left prior to police arrival and was picked up by a family member. The victim ended up attending the police station in which she provided information to the police. Officers helped the victim with a safety plan and returned to the residence and took the male suspect into custody for assault. The investigation revealed that the accused was already on probation and was in fact in breach of one of his conditions. The 22-year-old accused was charged with one count of Domestic Assault and one count of Breach of Probation. He was released on his own recognizance and will appear before a Justice at the Belleville Ontario Court of Justice on August 10, 2020 to answer to his charges. The name of the accused will not be released to protect the integrity and identity of the victim in this matter.
