Rental fraud has struck again locally.
Prince Edward County OPP received a report Thursday about a person who responded to an ad online for a rental property via email.
Police say the individual sent approximately $4,680 via e-transfer to the supposed renter and was told there would be a key sent to them by mail before moving day.
Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the property already had a full time tenant and the rental ad was a sham.
To help prevent yourself from being a victim of this type of fraudulent activities be aware of the following:
· Demand to meet the landlord or representative in person
· Always ask for a tour prior to giving deposits
· Be alert to emails that contain poor spelling and grammar
· Don’t supply any personal information or deposits prior to confirming the property is actually for rent
Before sending money digitally, ask questions and conduct research.
