Belleville police officers responded to a call about an intoxicated man near the water on South Front Street around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
Once police arrived, the man began to swim into the bay.
After trying to convince the man to return to shore he refused and stayed in the water for nearly an hour and a half.
Belleville firefighters were called to the scene and were able to get the man from the water by boat.
The 36-year-old Belleville man was arrested for public intoxication and was later released.
