A Belleville councillor is calling for some action on the 2020 budget, which has been delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic issues.
At Monday’s virtual city council meeting, Councillor Ryan Williams raised the issue of the operating budget which is usually dealt with in April.
Williams called for a draft budget by the end of June.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk said the city is managing on the 2019 budget until federal and provincial COVID-19 funding is known.
Councillor Chris Malette indicated there was a “disconnect” and that the councillors should get briefing notes bi-weekly.
Panciuk added, “Anyone is welcome to speak with CAO Bovay and Finance Director (Carol) Heinze but to proceed with a budget now, without knowing the COVID funding, would be entirely speculation.”
And, Finance Committee Chair Councillor Bill Sandison said councillors should come to him with those concerns.
Williams is expected to bring forward a motion at the next meeting of city council.
