Invasive species can present a challenge for protecting and managing local waterways, a challenge that Parks Canada plans to address in partnership with local agencies.
During a Thursday meeting, Bay of Quinte MP Chris Malette spoke to Parks Canada officials, regarding plans to mitigate the invasive plant species Water Soldier in the Trent Severn Waterway.
During the meeting, MP Malette said that invasive species don’t respect jurisdictional boundaries, and could pose a threat to other waterways if left unchecked.
“This really is an urgent all hands on deck,” said MP Malette. “The threat is real, and I appreciate there is a commitment to collaboration on this.”
Officials from Parks Canada said they were working to coordinate with local conservation authorities, landowners, and other provincial agencies in a unified effort to control the invasive plant.
