Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says there are no grounds for charges against Belleville Police after a woman broke her wrist during a shoplifting incident this past March.
The woman had been held by a security guard, for shoplifting at a an east end grocery store on the afternoon of March 14 and was taken into custody by Belleville Police.
After being taken to the police station, she was transported to hospital because of the injury to her left wrist and the SIU invoked its mandate.
SIU Director Joseph Martino says after reviewing security footage “it is apparent the woman broke her wrist in the course of her interaction with the security guard”, so there is no criminal liability of any police officer and the file is closed.
