A Belleville councillor questioned a funding request to Hastings County by the Grace Inn Shelter, saying she has “never seen a financial statement for the shelter.”
At a recent meeting of the Community and Human Services committee which serves Belleville and Quinte West as well as the county, Councillor Pat Culhane questioned the funding request from the Grace Inn for $201,981 for the year 2020 – 2021 and $122,995 for the year 2021-2022.
Culhane told the committee she has never seen a financial statement from the shelter and was concerned not all people given shelter are from “this community.”
Director of Community and Human Resources Erin Rivers told the committee, “The majority of the residents are from Hastings County and Belleville. Some are people who came back to this area now they know about the shelter.”
Culhane spoke to Quinte News on Wednesday about her questions at the committee.
At the committee meeting, Hastings County Warden Rick Phillips commented, “Belleville already gave funding (to the shelter). Why wouldn’t you know? And if you didn’t know why didn’t you ask then?”
Culhane asked if Grace Inn could make a presentation to the committee in the future and was assured by Rivers “an information session could happen.”
Culhane told Quinte News, “I have no information, no financial plan, no operating plan, I don’t have anything. If the city had anything I didn’t get it.”
The committee is recommending for Hastings County funding Grace Inn Shelter at $54,282 for 2020-2021 and $25,000 for 2021-2022.
