Environmental Impacts
Council in Prince Edward County have declared a climate emergency and in an effort to be more environmentally friendly one councillor is asking for support to tackle a new issue.
Councillor Brad Nieman is asking for council’s support in lobbying the federal government to remove the word flushable on packaging for single-use wipes.
His motion states single use wipes are not in fact safe to flush and because they are unable to break down into small pieces, they accumulate and eventually clog the sanitary sewer system costing municipalities hundreds of millions of dollars.
Nieman says in his motion education and outreach could play a large part in reducing the impact.
Safety on Family Farms
Councillor and farmer Phil Prinzen is asking the Minister of the Attorney General, the Honourable Doug Downey to work with agricultural leaders to find a way to enforce laws, or create new legislation that protects farmers, their families and their animals from activists opposed to animal agriculture.
Prinzen says in his motion to council there has been a steady increase in harassment of farmers and livestock transporters by those opposed to the industry and recent attacks resulting in no charges being laid have left farmers feeling unprotected by the legal system.
He is asking for stronger legislation or new legislation to ensure the safety of Ontario farm families, employees and animals.
Wine Industry Support
Councillor Bill Roberts wants the Prince Edward County wine industry to be increased through consumer access.
Roberts is bringing forward a motion that asks that any new retail model for alcohol sales supports 100% Ontario grown industry.
The motion comes following the expansion of beer and wine sales in Ontario to corner, grocery and big-box stores.
He says this would continue to provide economic benefits to the County community.
Council meets at Shire Hall at 7 p.m.
