The company that is planning to set up a marijuana processing facility in Belleville’s industrial park is planning significant layoffs.
In a statement on its website, Hexo Corporation has laid off close to 200 people “across its departments and locations”, as the Quebec-based company tries to make itself more profitable.
The cuts didn’t spare company executives either, as Chief Manufacturing Officer Arno Groll and Chief Marketing Officer Nick Davies are among the employees who have been let go.
Hexo leased 500,000 square feet of the former Sears building in September of 2018 and has been planning to build its processing facility, which was expected to bring close to 200 jobs to Belleville.
There’s no word on exactly how the cuts could affect the proposed Belleville location, but Quinte News has reached out to Hexo representatives for comment.
The company has been struggling of late and delayed the release of its fourth-quarter financial figures, citing slow store rollouts and government tie-ups as part of the reason for the financial slow down.
