Bay of Quinte Liberal MP Neil Ellis was the only one of the area incumbents to retain his seat on Monday, narrowly edging out Conservative Tim Durkin by about 1,400 votes.
Ellis earned 39.3% of the ballots cast and will have to deal with a different feel in Ottawa, with a Liberal minority government.
Ellis told CJBQ’s Canada Votes panel that his party would likely work with the NDP because of some shared values, but he hasn’t started thinking ahead to that just yet.
Durkin, who was still able to garner 36.9 % of the vote, congratulated Ellis on his victory and says he’ll have to consider if he’ll run again, should the minority government not hold up.
The NDP’s Stephanie Bell earned 15.8%, with 6% voting for the Green Party’s Danny Celovsky and 1.9% voting for the PPC’s Paul Bordonaro.
Initial voter turnout in the riding was 66.1%, not counting those who registered on election day, which was down from 69% in 2015.
