The Liberal MP for Bay of Quinte has tabled a private members bill aimed at ending veteran homelessness by 2025.
Neil Ellis tabled Bill M-225 on Wednesday, which was seconded by both Conservative and New Democrat MPs and supported by numerous national veteran and homelessness organizations.
The bill says a plan to end veteran homelessness should be prepared by the government and presented by 2020 and that it could include a National Veterans Housing Benefit, similar to a successful veterans housing benefit in the US, that would have a Canadian context and complement the National Housing Strategy.
Ellis says there are currently 3,000 to 5,000 homeless veterans across the country and that the country has the resources and experienced partners to solve the problem.
The bill, which is also being supported by the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs is to be debated in the house of Commons on June 11.
