Local public health officials are warning about the presence of Carfentanil found in drugs in the Hastings and Prince Edward area.
Carfentanil is an extremely dangerous and potent drug, with Belleville Police saying it has been found locally in cocaine and heroin, but could be cut into any substance.
Police are also attributing Carfentanil to two overdoses in the region, along with a spike in hospital visits related to opioid overdoses over the past couple of weeks.
HPE Public Health Officials are asking members of the public to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and say users of drugs like heroin and cocaine should be extra cautious.
They say you should:
- Know the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose
- Call 911
- Administer Naloxone/Narcan (Lifesaver Kits)
- Stay with the individual while you wait for paramedics to arrive
- Be aware that if an overdose is the result of carfentanil, more Naloxone may be required to reverse the overdose
Additional signs of an overdose include:
- Won’t wake up easily or at all
- Breathing is very slow, erratic or not at all
- Fingernails and/or lips turn blue
- Body is limp
- Deep snoring or gurgling
- Pin point pupils
- Vomiting
