The Belleville General Hospital Foundation is thanking a city pharmacy owner for a generous donation to the BGH Oncology Department.
Wynand Bekker, who owns the Shoppers Drug Marts on Dundas Street East and on Sidney Street, presented a cheque to the foundation today for just over $20,000.
The money was raised during the store’s “Shoppers Love. You.” campaign last year.
Bekker says it’s important to donate to the Oncology Department because “so many local families struggle with cancer” and the money will “benefit the entire community”.
Last year, visits to the Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Cancer Clinic at BGH grew to more than 8,000 total patient visits, with that number expected to rise again this year, based on medical trends.
The most common cancers treated at BGH are breast, colon, lung prostate, melanoma and lymphoma.
