A kindergarten class from St. Gregory School got a lesson in “people safety” at the Children’s Safety Village in Belleville today.
The children had the help of Belleville Deputy Police Chief Mike Callahan to learn about different child luring techniques and how to avoid those types of situations while biking or walking home from school, or to the store.
Statistics show that’s when the majority of those types of incidents happen.
Students learned how to identify potentially dangerous situations, or people in the community, through age-appropriate methods and were able to practice their new skills inside the safe confines of the safety village which replicates a town setting.
Program administrators say the lesson is meant to empower kids with the skills to stay safe, rather than needlessly instilling fear.
