There’s good news for local people who make public transit their preferred mode of transportation.
Today, Bay of Quinte MP Neil Ellis, joined by Mayors Taso Christopher and Robert Quaiff and Quinte West Deputy Mayor Jim Alyea, announced a combined $16.5 million in federal and provincial money going to fund local public transit infrastructure projects.
The federal government will provide just over $9 million in funding, while the province will pitch in nearly $7.5 million.
Ellis, who made strides to improve transit as Mayor of Belleville, explains how important it is for the Quinte area.
He adds the investment will pay off greatly for the community.
Ellis says plans include a fully functional transit service through the entire city of Belleville and a bus that goes straight from Prince Edward County all the way to the Belleville Casino.
The money is expected to spread out over 10 years for these projects.
Ellis says along with the funding, the city of Belleville’s share will push the full investment to well over $20 million.
