The Hastings Prince Edward District School Board is one of six boards across the province which are part of a broadband internet test program.
It is called the Broadband Internet Innovation Centre. It allows the board and all schools access to faster and more independent internet access.
Currently to get online, the signal goes from the school, to the Education Centre, then Queen’s University, to Toronto, then online.
Also if the signal went down at the board, all schools would go black.
Now, thanks to upgrades, each school will be independent.
The goal is to offer a 1MB/S connection, for every student in the board, regardless of where the school’s located.
Director of Education Mandy Savery-Whiteway says the Ministry of Education is providing complete funding.
The internet capabilities will be available across the Tri-Board, which means students in the Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic Board and the Limestone Board, will have the same internet.
Boards in North Bay, Guelph, Thunder Bay, Toronto and St Catherine’s are also taking part.
