On 19 December 2017, the Belleville Police Service were contacted in regards to a phone scam that was received by a local Belleville business. The fraudulent caller indicated that they were from Ontario Hydro and that the business had not paid their hydro bill and their power was about to be cut off. The caller said they could accept payment over the phone with a credit card.
Citizens are reminded not to give out personal or financial information over the phone and that these incidents may also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by phone at 1-888-495-8501 or online at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
